It is one of the methods for opiate addiction, although if you’re in the US it is tightly regulated and for addiction is only given out as a liquid in very small quantities, typically an inpatient starting with those who stick with it can be done outpatient with liquid for a few days at most. You might also want to look into Suboxone, it is more expensive but has the benefit of being able to get it at a pharmacy. Which helps if she is unwilling to go into a facility.
I would talk it over with a psychiatrist or an addiction specialist, and see what programs they have. It will also depend on the type of pain killers she is addicted to, depending on the level of abuse and the danger of that abuse level they will prescribe medication based off that.

You don’t have to be inpatient to be on methadone, my father has been on it for a long time. He never went anywhere inpatient, and all it really did was replace his addiction with another addiction which was legal but in my opinion just as bad if not worse. You can also eventually get “take home” doses for up to a month at the clinic here. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone I love, and even though he is on it my father says the same thing. It’s not treatment for the addiction, only a change of drug.
