When you stop taking it you will need to go to a detox center or “Methadone clinic”. Withdrawal symptoms will be headaches, itching, feeling of creepy crawlies under your skin, insomnia, and possibly hallucinations. If you get proper treatment during the detox phase the symptoms may abate after a week. If you go it alone, expect it to last much longer, up to a month.

A slow taper is recommended and hopefully your doctor will do it that way. Withdrawal itself can be very painful when stopped abruptly. Methadone is stopped abruptly symptoms such as stomach cramps, diarrhea and muscle and bone ache will occur. These symptoms begin within one to three days after the last dose, peak at three to five days, and then gradually subside, although other symptoms such as sleep problems and drug cravings may continue for months.
