The baby itself will become addicted to the drugs as they pass through the placenta in the bloodstream. This will make the baby’s birth highly distressing and it will need to undergo therapy e.g. methadone treatment if the mother was a heroin addict to ween them slowly off of the addiction.

These are the main effects of drug use are:
Low weight at birth
Early delivery or miscarriage
Growth and development may be slow
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or Fetal Alcohol Effect (FAE)
Mental retardation
Heart problems
Defects of the face and body
Death

It is also thought that drug use can increases the risk of the child having ADHD.

As the other person stated, if the mother is addicted to hard drugs, there are a number of complications that can arise. The most obvious is that the baby will be born addicted to the drugs themselves. Babies like this are born okay, but shortly after entering the world they go into withdrawal and often they are given methadone to help them cope. Nurses say there is a particular cry that drug addicted babies have. You know how mums can tell the difference when a baby cries for food, a cuddle, or a change? Well, there is a cry for ‘baby need a fix’. It’s sad, but true.

There is a huge risk of miscarriage associated with drug abuse. Many of the drugs have the effect of restricting blood flow through the placenta, and this results in the foetus dying and being expelled from the body. Some of the drugs cause clots in the blood because they are cut with, for example, rat poison.

There is a well documented syndrome (foetal alcohol syndrome) which affects babies of alcoholic mothers. If you bear in mind that a lot of drug abusers also abuse alcohol, there is another syndrome becoming clear, which arises when drug and alcohol addicted mothers give birth.

If you’re doing a project on this, the best people to see are the local drug and alcohol team. They have a wealth of knowledge and often some of them at least are ex addicts. They can really go into detail with you.

Hope that helps!
