It’s used to treat heroin addicts.
Heroin withdrawal is extremely painful and long. Methadone is given because it gives the body a similar feeling so it does not withdrawal, so they don’t need to take heroin anymore. The main idea of it is that it replaces heroin as an addiction, its safer (no injections) and less taxing on your health.
It’s pretty heavily abused. It’s supposed to get you off heroin, but it is just a free way to get high in most areas because of methadone clinics giving it out for free.
