They have many choices depending on how severe the pain. Acetaminophen (Tylenol and other brands) is available over-the-counter in pharmacies and is a first choice in hospitals since they usually use as mild as possible.
Here are a couple of lists:

codeine-containing products (usually combined with something else that is not necessarily a “pain pill” but still is a narcotic) — Tylenol 3, Fioricet with codeine, Soma with codeine
Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet, Norco, Polytussin (hydrocodone)
Percocet, Percodan, Oxycontin, Tylox (oxycodone)
Dilaudid (hydromorphone)
MS Contin (morphine)
Demerol (meperidine)
Duragesic (patch), Actiq (lozenge) — (fentanyl-very potent stuff)
Darvon, Darvocet (prophoxyphene)
Nubain (nalbuphine, injection only)
Ultram (tramadol – not a true opioid, but used as a pain pill)
Methadone
Stadol (butorphanol)
