What Can Someone Do When Withdrawing From Oxycodone? 10 PTS?
Question by MDrape: What can someone do when withdrawing from Oxycodone? 10 PTS?
Please do not critisize me, it isn’t me…it is for someone I know that wants to stop taking them but is afraid of what will happen. What are things that he can do to stop and make the withdrawal and detox easier? I guess he’s been taking them for a while after an auto accident. Will methadone help? What natural remedies are there? Thank you SO much…10 PTS BEST ANSWER

Sure, it is probably possible for him to go to a methadone clinic, and go to a doctor who is licensed to prescribe Suboxone, which is another medication for opioid withdrawals, but that might not even be necessary, it depends on the amounts he’s been taking, and the length of time he has been using them for. If he has only been taking small amounts for a couple of weeks, then he could probably withdraw at home-you don’t die from opioid withdrawals, they just suck. At home you can ease most of the symptoms. For the sweats, use an ice pack, for the diarrhea, make sure you drink water, and maybe Pedialyte, to restore the electrolytes from the fluid loss; for nausea, he could take Pepto-Bismol; for body aches, he would have to make do with Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve, or there’s one over-the-counter medication called Percogesic that works better than all of those. To help with the cravings he will probably have, dextromethorphan, which is in many cough syrups, will work, and it will help with irritability and also stomach aches. But instead of getting the cough syrrups, which all contain other ingredients you don’t want, buy the Robitussin Cough Gels, they’re orange gels in a little white bottle, and they are only dextromethorphan-so is the Zicam cough spray in the pink and purple bottle . For restlessnes and insomnia, anti-histamines iike Benadryl are useful. He won’t necessarily have all these problems, and you do not want take a bunch of these meds at once, so you have to be aware of that. The most important part is to gradually, very slowly, wean yourself off the oxycodone-decrease the dose really really slowly. DO NOT just abruptly stop taking them.

Withdrawal from an opiate is very painful if it has been abused or used for an extended period of time. For natural remedies, he can try Valarian Root for a muscle relaxer and sleep agent. He can also safely add Melatonin supplements which will help induce sleep. Advil and Tylenol, alternated, will reduce some of the pain and keep the fever at bay. Benedryl does sometimes work for the anxiety, but it really depends on how long he has been taking them. He also needs to watch his blood pressure because the withdrawals can cause spikes.
The best thing he can do is see a doctor and let them know what he is going through. A mild sleep agent like Trazadone or Rozerem is non-addictive. Clonidine will help with the anxiety and BP issues. It helps with the anxiety because it keeps the heart rate down. Medications like Vistaril, which are antihistamines are also helpful for the anxiety. None of these drugs are habit forming.
He needs to stay away from Benzodiazapines like Xanax and valium since he has an abuse history. He should also stay away from drugs like Ambien and Lunesta for the same reason. It is not particularly safe to go cold turkey on opiates. chances are he will not die, but his BP and HR can get up too high and require a visit to the hospital. Try a warm bath a few times a day too. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids so you can flush the system and also keep hydrated while having the sweats. Try and eat something that is very healthy since your body is being depleted of vitamins and minerals. You should also take a vitamin supplement, especially if you are not able to eat.
