I’ve used heroin infrequently enough to never becoming fully addicted, so my only experience with methadone was as an occasional gift. From addicted friends, however, I get the impression that methadone blocks heroin like vodka blocks gin. There are many people who consider themselves “clean” for multiple years due to daily methadone use. Many continue to use H from time to time, and end up just using the methadone as an extra opioid to get high on.
Suboxone seems to be the successor to methadone, and people have pretty good success getting opioid free with it.

Methadone should never be taken as a replacement for any drugs. Short term use of methadone can help with detox withdrawal pains, side effects etc, but should never be used to replace a heroin habit. Sadly, many detox centers and even drug rehabs provide yearly prescriptions for methadone and drugs like suboxone, then before the person knows it they have developed a habit with methadone too that they need to overcome. IV therapy is the best/safest form of detox. I would look into that before trying to depend on methadone.
