What Are Some Good Chronic Pain, Extended Release Medications?
Question by W1990: What are some good chronic pain, extended release medications?
BESIDES the fentanyl patch, that is contradicted in my current health situation.
I heard a lot of people say that Opana ER (oxymorphone) wasn’t very good at all…
Right now I take 2 tablets of 10/500 MG Hydrocodone/APAP, every 6 hours for various pain.
What would be a good extended-release med for me, that would maybe last more than 6 hours a dose?

For severe chronic pain Doctors may prescribe percocet that is coated to be extended release, it works well if taken as directed, there is no APAP in them so they are not so toxic to the liver.

If the patch is out and you don’t want the Opana ER, then your other main options are morphine ER (MSContin/Kadian), Oxycontin, and methadone. You’d take any of those three every 12 hours.
People differ so much in how they respond to these drugs that I can’t tell you which of these might be the best for you. I know a lot of people who have had bad experiences with methadone, and it’s supposed to be pure horror to withdraw from, but then again, for some people, it’s a life-saver. Still, if I were you, I’d try one of the others first. Morphine is much cheaper than Oxycontin, so if your doctor gives you a choice of which extended release medication to try first, you might want to give it preference over Oxycontin. But it may well take some trial-and-error before you discover which one works the best for you.
Good luck! It may take a bit of time, but once you find the right one, I think you’ll be really glad you switched to an extended-release med. I know that getting off of that up-and-down cycle of the short-term pills made a huge difference for me.
