Pulmonary Edema and OD Death?

Question by Ashley: Pulmonary edema and OD death?
Your Resolved Question: Pulmonary edema and accidental OD death?

My 20 year old brother passed away on February 3, 2012. I need answers about his death, and not sugar coated ones, I guess as a form of closure.

His autopsy report listed his cause of death as accidental overdose due to opiates and benzodiazepines with contributing factors of pulmonary edema and possible pneumonia in his right lobe. He also was found to have an enlarged heart.

He had blood coming from his mouth and nose and his tongue was protruding from clenched teeth with no visible lacerations to suggest he had bitten it.

He was found unresponsive by a family member and he was still in bed.

The coroner stated it was the lowest levels of opiates and benzodiazepines he had seen in an accidental OD stating he did not even have twice the therapeutic amount.

I need to know exactly what happened at his time of death. I think people are trying to protect me and not tell me the truth. Was his death painful? Did he likely suffer? Was he conscious or were there enough drugs in his system to keep him unconscious? Did he feel like he was drowning? If he was conscious would he have been able to yell for help? Did he know death was coming??

Any answers provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

i doubt he suffered pain, if he was on opiates its more likely that he drifted off to sleep and just didn’t wake up again. some people are just more sensitive to painkillers… its not unknown for people die from just taking 4 paracetamol. when other people take far more and don’t die. everyone’s body metabolises drugs differently.

I believe his enlarged heart was not the problem that it was probably the drugs he was taking. My husband passed right after Christmas. He was taking Methadone and would forget that he took it then would take another and he just drifted off and died, peacefully. I doubt that your brother even knew what was happening to him – you have my deepest condolences. 20 is just too young to pass but even low levels of those drugs he was taking would’ve put him in a feel no pain state of mind. If your brother had known something was wrong he would have fallen out of bed or tried to get someone’s attention but as he was still in bed suggests he died peacefully. The protruded tongue was same as my husband. The police told me that if someone is having a heart attack, they’ll be found clutching thier heart or if they’re sufficating , they’ll be found clutching thier throats. I would say that your brother passed peacefully.
