Oxycodone Addiction?

Question by gray’s mama: Oxycodone addiction?
I was in a pretty bad car wreck about 3 years ago. I was on my way to college when a car pulled onto the highway going across traffic. I hit the other car headon doing about 70 mph. By the grace of God I walked away but since then I have had terrible back pain. I have been to tons of doctors, had MRIs done, physical therapy, etc. Nothing helps and none of the doctors have found anything wrong. I started going to a pain management dr. about 6 months ago. He put me on oxycodone 10mg as needed for pain. I started out taking maybe one a week, now I take up to 4 or 5 a day. I can’t go one day without them. How do I get off of these things? The dr. won’t perscribe anything else. I have a 2 year old son and my husband I want to try for another baby this summer but I can’t when I can’t stop taking these pills. my husband doesn’t know how many pills i take or that i can’t make myself stop. any advise would be greatly appreciated.

They can be addictive, obviously. My question to you is are you taking them for pain or because of the way they make you feel? There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking 4 or 5 daily if you are taking them for the pain. With this type of drug, it is common for people to build a tolerance to them, therefore they need to periodically increase their dosage. So, once again, if you have increased them because they aren’t helping the pain in smaller quantities, it’s ok. Just let your doctor know what’s going on so he/she can adjust your dosage appropriately. On the other hand, if you have increased them because of the way they make you feel rather than for pain, then you need to talk to your doctor about being weaned off of them. You cannot stop taking them “cold turkey”.

Ask your doctor about buprenorphine. It’s a new non-narcotic treatment for opioid addiction that is much safer than methadone, and can also help with pain management.
