Methadone is a drug that operates in the body similar to heroin or OxyContin–legal heroin. It is a central nervous system depressant but also largely replaces the body’s production of endorphins.

The difference between methadone and many other similar opiates and opioids is that it has a much longer half-life. The half-life is the time that it takes 1/2 of the drug to leave the body. Many drugs like heroin have an average half-life of four hours but methadone can have a half-life of up to 96 hours.

Most people using methadone as an alternative to heroin find that taking methadone does not give them a high but simply keeps them from going into painful withdrawal. This is why someone taking methadone who takes another narcotic like OxyContin will cause an overdose because the depressant effects are magnified and the lungs and heart start to shut down.

This is a particular problem if someone is taking methadone for pain. Because of the longer time it takes for any pain relief, people sometimes take too much or another narcotic and this can lead to an overdose.
