Is It Possible to Use Methadone Without Getting Addicted?

Question by Not Paul: Is it possible to use methadone without getting addicted?
My friend claims that if you use methadone to treat heroin addiction, but only take the methadone for 4 days or so and then stop, you will not have anymore heroin withdrawal and you will not experience withdrawal from methadone either. I said: If that were true, why would there be so many former heroin addicts that are now addicted to methadone? Why do methadone clinics, and doctors who prescribe methadone, continue to prescribe it for long periods of time, rather than prescribing it for 4 days and then telling the person to stop? My friend claims that this is because doctors and methadone clinics make a lot of money by getting people hooked on methadone, and therefore are involved in a scheme in order to hide the fact that you only need to take it for 4 days or so.

Your friend is uneducated on matters of heroin and methedone. Tell her to get herself addicted to heroin and then seek rehab with methadone and quit after four days. No heroin or methadone addict could ever quit in four days, it’s impossible because of the killing-strength of the withdrawal and the intensity of the urges to satisfy the addiction. People have died from attempting things like your friend suggests, though usually not of their own accord. Ask her to give you even a shred of proof that supports her theory and then visit a clinic and speak to the addicts. You’ll definitely get your answer. Don’t share needles though, you’ll get HIV. xD
