The LD-50 of DMT when it is injected is 1.6mg/kg. The first source I’ve provided does a risk assessment, and you can see from the conclusion that they deem it as risky as codeine, mescaline or methadone. This doesn’t mean it has the same effects as, for example, codeine (like respiratory suppression at higher doses) nor the same sort of addictiveness, but given that one can lethally overdose on codeine, I’d assume that with intravenous use, you can fatally overdose on DMT.

They also mention “serotonergic” effects. This is to do with serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in a lot of brain-drug interactions. This also relates to people’s mental health. As the report mentions, DMT can exacerbate or prompt a psychotic episode in susceptible people. Serotonin is often linked to depression and schizophrenia also. If you have a mental illness, a family history of mental illness or some increased risk for it, then DMT can risk causing the onset of an episode or a relapse.

Addiction does not seem to be a significant risk in DMT.

Smoking it is a little different for risks to do with overdose. I think that smoking it is a method of delivery that is self-limiting, so that it is too difficult to build up enough of a dosage. DMT is both fast-acting and quickly dissipating, so I don’t think there is enough time to build up the required lethal dose.

However, there are other risks. DMT can be very disorienting and as a very intense trip, people can panic. What they do when panicked is usually not risky, but has the potential to be. Even on pleasant trips, the safest option is to have a sitter or someone nearby, as you might lose touch with reality for 15 minutes or more, and what happens in that time is anyone’s guess.

Smoking it also carries all the usual risks of any smoked plant matter, particularly through chronic use. If you have a respiratory problem like asthma then the risks are increased.

The second source I’ve provided is erowid.com. If you already know it, then you’d know it is a very comprehensive source of information on psychotropic substances. If you are considering experiencing DMT, check out the experience vault or read some of their book recommendations. If you’re just doing research for a project, it has very useful chemical and miscellaneous information on it.
