Pay no attention to the previous post. It was not only not helpful but they gave advice you don’t need. Methadone is one of the oldest and most successful treatments for opiate addiction there is. There is a 90% relapse rate when addicts stop using it but while on MMT the success rate is also 90-95%. Would people tell you to pull your son off of insulin for diabetes because “he really needed to get off that stuff?” Of course not. Unfortunately in most states when MMT patients are placed in jail they are not given their Methadone and they suffer greatly. In Florida they now give Methadone because they were sued after 2 MMT patients died from not getting their methadone. See the following story…

You Have to scroll down pretty far to see the story.

But you need help Now right? Well, this is all I can offer and maybe it will help..
There is a doctor named Dr. James Payte who has written a letter you can print out and give to the jail warden which among other things threatens the jail with legal action because people that are not doctors removing a prescribed medication is essentially “practicing medicine without a license” right? And there is a statute they violate when they do this which he reminds them of in the letter…
“A preliminary consultation with legal counsel concerning this matter reveals that the actual or proposed denial of treatment imposed on an incarcerated MMT patient violates his/her constitutional rights under U.S. Section 1983 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, among others.”

Although contacting him may take a long time because he is very busy.
You may also want to print info regarding a study that looked at the benefits of continuing MMT in jail by evaluating the states that do have such programs at this link…

This article states “data suggest that linkage to MMT upon release, including short-term payment for methadone, is
a valuable intervention that “reduces illicit drug use and related risk behaviors, and increases overall stability among former inmates re-entering the community.” (McKenzie et al., 2005).
It couldn’t hurt to highlight the cases of the Florida deaths as well.
In addition you can contact a lady named Rokki Baker who is the president of NAMA (National Association of Methadone Advocates) at

She may be able to give you a few more pointers. How long has he been in jail? The methadone begins to wear off around 48hrs. after the initial dose. I hope this helps. You can also e mail me if I can do anymore…
