Question by Chris the 4th: How hard will it be to come off of 40 Mg’s of methadone a day? Been addicted for 8 years?
I have been on Hydrocodone, oxycodone, and methadone over the years. 8 years total now. Anyway at the moment at a steady dose of 40 Mg;s of methadone per day. How hard will it be and what should I do. I want to end this but scared after 8 years.

Addiction is psychological, not physical, so the difficulty of kicking a habit depends entirely on the individual. Methadone, like all opioids, produces unpleasant symptoms if you have developed a physical dependence on the drug and you stop taking it. The withdrawal is not dangerous, just unpleasant. Methadone has a rather long withdrawal period. If you’d like to quit, make sure you have some time off to rest in bed—as you might for the flu—and try to find someone who can keep you company and help with day-to-day chores so that you can rest. Some symptoms, such as headaches and aches and pains, can be treated by other medications during withdrawal—ask your doctor for assistance.

Ultimately you will quit if and when you decide that being drug-free is more important than feeling crummy for two weeks.

I completely agree with tech.

Though, when i was kicking my addiction, I took time off of work (if you do) and spent my time sleeping, watching childish cartoons that killed my attention span, and chewed a lot of gum…well, in between the cigarettes. I just wasn’t allowed to smoke anytime I wanted, so gum actually helped a lot. If I ever started feeling sick, got sweaty, paranoid or near hysterics I would take a natural sleep aid and just sleep it off, with a lot of cool air. Like, fans or the A/C.

It may just be me, but I believed it was easier to believe my nightmare withdrawals then to put up with my withdrawals when awake,
Maybe I have the wrong suggestion, it just helped me. Now, I’m sober. I drink socially and still smoke a lot, but….nothing too serious.

Also, nausea will be a thing, so will aches and feelings of lessened worth.
Write it down in front of you on a board or a mirror, just don’t let yourself believe any wrong feelings against you, yourself.

Remember that you are the same you you have always loved. You are a beautiful person, and though I don’t know you, I am so proud you want to kick it. (:
