If you want to treat chronic pain get something other than methadone… That drug has withdrawal symptoms that last longer then heroin’s.
My friend took it once and just felt sick from it.

Unlike first guy that answered, methadone is a wonderful treatment for chronic pain if administered by doctors who are highly trained in what they are doing and if you are a chronic pain sufferer that may be on meds. for a long time. Yes, withdrawals will be difficult when you stop taking the medicine, but again, under proper care it is much more widely prescribed now a days than many people know.
If you doctor doesn’t want you to take it is more likely because you are awaiting surgery. You may be able to up your dose of what you are taking now, until your surgery but the deal with that in your doctors eyes may have something to do with managing your pain AFTER the surgery.
My experience with methadone is that it has worked wonders for me. When I was taking Lortabs – more than I wanted to put into my body each day (even though the doctors said it was O.K.) it was the constant ups and downs from not getting enough relief that drove me to want to be off meds, all together. So I did. Coming off of pain relief all together is something that I appreciate having done now, simply because it showed me that I do need pain control but that the Lortabs were not for me. My pain management suggested methadone which I was weary about due to the horror stories and knowledge that it was for heroin addicts…but now that I have been closely monitor, found the lowest dose needed for my pain control, I am living a quality of life that is one without constantly focusing on pain or when my next pill is to be taken.
With methadone (or at least the type I take – nothing like the wafers that dissolve in water that a heroin addict may take) the difference say v.s. a Lortab or Percocet is that it is longer acting. Also though, it takes longer to take full effect. If someone was to take one, per say, and not feel so great from it and get little relief, it is because it takes up to two weeks to gradually build in your system. After just a few days of doctors starting me on 5mg. twice a day, up to four times a day over the time period they suggested…I was getting a perfect amount of control where I was suddenly feeling like before my “accident” and surgery considered the extensive damage to my body. I many times only need 3 of the 5mgs throughout the day and later found it harder to keep track of taking 3-4pills a day and talked to the doctor about changing my dose to 10mgs twice a day. He explained it may not take me through the day as well, but again, once I adjusted this was great for me because I only need 2 pills a day and eventually now may only need 1 a day.
So with that said, methadone may not be for everyone, and your doctor would know best (if you have a doctor you trust and believe is concerned about your best interest – your relationship with your doctor is key) but it changed my life. So much that now I am soon considering trying to work together with my doctor to ween me off the meds. so I can gage whether or not I may be able to work through my pain from here on out. I am sure that I will still have painful days, but the methadone and it’s pain control has given me that quality of life back to have this confidence.
You situation is in need of surgery by the sounds of it. You should consider you options though, and get more than one opinion – because there are people who do not get alleviation from disk surgeries…but if you are having this much pain in life then you have to be proactive. Have you tried Percocet vs. the Norco? It is almost the same medicine, but some find it stronger. I did. Until your surgery, a long acting medicine may not be something available to you.
Did this help at all?! : )
