Does Anyone Know About the Drug Suboxone?
Question by deb32541: Does anyone know about the drug Suboxone?
How long are you suppose to stay on this drug. My son has been on it for a long time and I am concerned. He had an addiction to pain killers and this was suppose to bring him slowly off those drugs. He is going thru bad time with family matters and his doctor told him not to detox now or he could go back to drugging again. If you have any information about this drug please let me know.

My best friend is on Suboxen. She was addicted to painkillers and she has been on it for two years. She has slowly weaned herself down to 1/4 pill a day, and soon will go to 1/4 every other day. I have heard from her and others that take it that it is just as hard to get off as the painkillers themselves. If he is going through some hard times the doctors are right, he doesn’t want to quit now, though when is it ever not hard? I would recommend he pick an activity, like a sport or something he can get into and literally trade this addiction for another. Sports are way healthier anyways. But it is hard, and the more supportive and understanding you are the easier it will be for him rather than you nagging him about getting off them.
I would have a solo visit with the doctor and bring a paper with a list of things you have learned, questions and concerns regarding the meds. The doctors job is to help you and your son. He can give you some really great advice, and knowledge about it. Thats what they are there for. It is a great thing if he isn’t on the pain meds though,.

Hi concerned mom,
Do not worry. Your son needs your support and understanding right now. Encourage him to remain stable on Suboxone for as long as he needs. The last thing he needs is to be going through withdrawals and/or relapsing. One thing for sure though..it is good he is on Suboxone and not Methadone for various reasons! And there is no set time frame a person is supposed to stay on the medication…it really does vary from person to person. I have been working with opiate addiction for quite some time now…and my best advice is for you to be supportive of him without pressuring him to get off the medication and allow him to slowly taper off it when he is physically and mentally ready to. When the time comes, he will on his own bring this up with the doctor and begin detox. Have a blessed day and hope this helps!
