Compare Methadone to Oxycontin? Mg’s Question? 10 Pts!?
Question by Cateyes: Compare Methadone to Oxycontin? Mg’s question? 10 pts!?
I need some information. I take Oxycontin for severe chronic pain, 80 mgs twice a day. My dr wants me to try Methadone as it’s easier to be prescribed and is supposed to control my pain just as well. Does anyone know what 10 mgs of Methadone would compare to against a 80 mgs of Oxycontin? And has anyone been prescribed this for pain, and if so, how well does it work? Any information would be deeply appreciated!
Thank You!

I have been prescribed both methadone and oxycodone for pain, and in my personal experience oxycodone worked just a little better for pain than an equal amount of methadone did.
My doctor explained to me that they were roughly equally effective, so that 10 mg of methadone should provide the same analgesic effects as 10 mg of oxycodone, but when switching medications a doctor will usually start you on a lower dose than the equivalent and work his way up to your former dose.
I felt the other effects associated with opiates longer with the methadone, but when it came to the actual pain relief oxycodone lasted longer – but that is only my personal experience. According to my pain management doctor it should have been the same.
In defense of methadone I will say that it works well when it comes to treating addiction because it stays in your system longer and prevents withdrawals. That is also my personal experience since my pain treatment unfortunately led to an addiction.
Good luck, and I hope you get the relief you need.
