Cancer Patient Injecting Own Narcotics…what Do I Do Now?

Question by Arianna: Cancer patient injecting own narcotics…what do I do now?
I have started injecting myself with Dilaudid (which was prescribed to me in pill form, but didn’t help with the pain when I took it that way). So I started dissolving it in sterile saline and injecting it, which helps much more with the pain.
I don’t want to become a junkie, but my pain is real and the pills barely help. My problem is that the injection sites become irritated and tender and sometimes red, like maybe there is an infection, but it clears up on its own in a day or two.
Is there a safer way to give myself these injectins? I hate having to go to the ER when the pain is so bad, knowing I can treat it at home, but I don’t want to risk a serious infection or necrosis of the tissue in these injection sites…maybe I’m just not doing it right??

It sounds like you already getting infections, this isn’t the way to go, your going to get scar tissue or infections doing it this way. Have a talk with your doctor and see what he can do.
