Can I Switch to Suboxone After Taking 5-10 Mg of Methadone 48 Hours Ago?

Question by Alex H: Can I switch to suboxone after taking 5-10 mg of methadone 48 hours ago?
I have been taking methadone for about 8-12 month but have never gone over 40mgs. I take about 5-10 mgs every day but have recently stopped and have gone 48 hours without any methadone. My question is can I take 4mg of suboxone now or must I wait the full 72 hours?

I would recommend that you wait for 72 hours after your last dose of methadone before taking Suboxone. Suboxone can trigger precipitated withdrawal when taken too soon after consuming a full-agonist opioid like methadone. Precipitated withdrawal is a really intense opioid withdrawal and not something you want to experience. Since methadone has such a long half-life, it is best to wait at least 72 hours after your last methadone dose before taking Suboxone.
