I would talk with your doctor about the nightmares. I’m not sure if you’re talking with a psychiatrist, but perhaps that type of doctor would be more familiar with methadone, too. Perhaps your system is just rejecting the substances in methadone, and you’re allergic to it. Please only stop the use of the drug under the direction of your doctor.

This site talks about the possible side effects of the drug, and it doesn’t mention nightmares albeit it may not be full list of possible adverse effects: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682134.html#side-effects

Methadone is usually a last resort for getting sober. The drug is merely a substitute for another drug such as heroin and other opiates including oxycodone and codeine. This site has counseling and treatment programs for those with a substance abuse problem (and some offer state and/or county funding for those without health insurance): http://dasis3.samhsa.gov/ and can click one’s state of residence on the map.

You may be familiar with the 12-step group Narcotics Anonymous, and here is the site to search for a meeting(s): http://www.na.org/index.php?ID=home-content-fm

Another 12-step program is Alcoholics Anonymous (and one may attend an “open” meeting if doesn’t have a drinking problem): http://www.aa.org/lang/en/meeting_finder.cfm?origpage=29
