Methadone has the same effect than morphine on your body, not on your psychological state.

To word it very simply, when you use heroin, your body doesn’t have to produce endorphines and it just gets lazy. When you stop using heroin, your body doesn’t restart this production as it assumes that you’ll get another dose. Therefore, you need something, which is why patients will use methadone (a strong enough opiace) to counteract the withdrawal effect.
