Im at 9mgs of Methadone What Do I Do Now?
Question by Danielle Plain: Im at 9mgs of methadone what do i do now?
Iv been on methadone since august of 2010, iam thankful for methadone helping me and saving me. If it wasn’t for methadone I’d probably be dead right now for the way I kept abusing heroin and oxys. But what I’m ashamed of is that every methadone patient I spoke too told me to start lowering asap and get off right away or ill be stuck for ever. I have not heard one success story from getting off methadone. I don’t care how sick iam I want off! Why? Well I don’t want to depend on something for the rest of my life. I live out of town and have to pay gas money every day to get my drink or appointments and plus I go to college and have to pay gas for those trips as well. The other reason too is there’s a certain course I want to take to help drug addicts and become an addictions councellor and they will not accept methadone patients and I understand why! Its been a passion for me for so long to take that course and to help people in rehab facilities. In case if I do get too too sick and can’t handle the sickness I have the coverage for hospitals if they do help. There’s gotta be something to help methadóne withdrawls, and plus I’m a mom and take care of him myself so I can’t see the hospital turning me down. Anyways the highest I got was 55mls and went down 2mls every 2 weeks, I am now at 9mls… I don’t know what I should do now that I’m at a very low dose and almost done, should I keep going down 2mls every two weeks??? And what will happen when I reach 5mls and go from 5mls one day, 4 the next, 3 the next day, 2 then 1 and just get off? Would that be safe? The doctor told me ill still be sick but not as sick as the others because everyone rushes themself off and end up really sick but if u take your time you will only be sick for a week… Anyways I hopes there’s a few people out there reading this and know an answer

Talk to your doctor and see what he reccomends as far as you slowly coming off methadone. I would stay on the same dose of methadone for a week or two before going down and continue on in that pattern so that you can mostly avoid the withdrawl. You’re doing great, I bet everyone is so proud of you. You’re a great person to want to help other addicts, shoot for your dream, you’ll be off of methadone soon enough, you can do this. Good luck in everything you aspire to do!
