Percocet vs. Oxycontin?

Question by Norton01: Percocet vs. Oxycontin?
Ok so I want to know for sure about this thing that has been bugging me. I have noticed so many people claiming to know the answer to this question but they all have different answers. Are Percocet and Oxycontin not two different drugs with two different chemical Makeups? I would obviously assume that Oxycontin is a lot more powerful than just your average percocet. Is this the case? I know that they are both considered narcotics but many different drugs can fall under the classification “Narcotic”. All I want to know is if Percocet and Oxycontin are two different drugs or if they are basically the same drug with a different name? Thanks.

Percocet is a short acting drug with immedicate relief where as Oxycotin is a long acting drug which you take every 12 hours because it releases so much at a time. Percocet you take but then it 4-6 hours your taking another one. Think of it as a graph where you take 1 percocet but then a few hours later it;s out of your system so you feel the need to take more for pain where as Oxycotin gives you the continues relief because it is a slow release drug. I hope that helps!!

Both Oxycontin and Percocet belong to the Opiate family. There are natural, semi-senthetic, and synthetic opiates. Opiates are analgesic painkillers. Natural opiates consist of Codeine, Morphine, and Opium. Semi-Synthetic opiates consist of Heroin, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone (Oxycontin), and Acetaminophen (Percocet). Fully Sythetic Opiates consist of Fentanyl and Methadone. I believe they may have slightly different chemical makeups, however they are from the same classicication of narcotics. They act on the opioid receptors (mu receptors) and basically produce the same effects. The only other differences between opiates is the dose, route of administration, reason for use, abuse potential, toxicity level. Hope this helps.
