Addiction to Pain Medications?

Question by Michaela L: Addiction to pain medications?
A friend called me last night to tell me that she has an addiction to Vicoden. She is given the medication for pain from a ruptured disc in her neck. She has progressed to the point that she takes 8 pills at a time as much as 20 pills in a day. She has been able to get an Rx from 2 docs; 1 for 150 pills and the other rx is 100 pills. She wants treatment, but most facilities don’t take her insurance or they want a lot of money. She says she is on a waiting list for a bed at 3 different facilites.
My question is, should I be watching her for anything serious? Would there be a withdrawal problem if she just stops the meds? Also, does anyone know what the prognosis is for this type of addiction?
I did notice some inconsistencies in the info she gave me, as far as her calling the detox/rehab facilities. I don’t feel that she really called as many places as she said.

She needs to get into a rehabilitation program asap and she needs the support of those who care and love her.

I dont think you can take 20 pills a day with out over dosing.
