Pain Med Without the Side Effect of Methadone?

My mother in law has a bad back and takes Methadone for the pain. She doesn’t like how it makes her feel. You see her falling asleep while standing up, dropping things, slurring, etc.. She even started taking half the dose a day that she’s supposed to (2 a day when she’s supposed to take 4 a day) which makes the side effects less severe but they’re still there. She’s tired of it and wants to be put on new medication.
Are there any strong pain relievers that have less severe side effects? Or even a medication to take on the side of it to get rid of the side effects?

You didn’t happen to mention whether you are in the UK, USA or elsewhere but in the UK there are Physicians who specialize in the management of pain. I suspect that this is the case elsewhere. Often they have a background in Anaesthesiology or palliative care.
Perhaps your mother-in-law should discuss the possibility of a referal to a pain specialist with her GP or whoever prescribed the Methadone.
