Methadone Overdose Effects?
Question by starmama: Methadone Overdose Effects?
I know a 60 year old male who has been on methadone for years. He often nods throughout the day and looks like a person who is high on heroin during those times. Last year he learned that be has Hepatitis C. I’m not sure if he got the necessary treatment for it.
Recently, he went away and was given a 7 day supply from his clinic. The first three days were fine but on day 4 he became very ill. He was vomiting, nauseous, lethargic, had no appetite, and his urine was extremely dark. He was drinking beer as he always does prior to this. Fast forward two weeks later and he still has little to no appetite which isn’t like him at all and practically sleeps all day and night. We have tried to get him to go to the ER but he refuses to do so. Instead, he has chosen to wait to see his doctor to whom he won’t see for a few more days.
My question is, does this sound like liver failure due to the Hep C or a methadone overdose? Would a methadone overdose cause these symptoms for this long? Keep in mind that this is a person who hasn’t had any problems going to an ER for other issues in the past and yet he refuses to go now. We really don’t know what to think.

In my opinion, it sounds more like it’s related to him taking methadone and alcohol than liver failure from his hep C. It’s a very slow process to get liver failure from hep C taking 20-30 years before signs of liver failure might show up. It wouldn’t start with the symptoms you describe anyway. Drinking beer on top of having hep C is very stupid to do. It just doubles the damage to the liver. The virus C is already attacking it and then drinking on top of it which is also a toxin to the liver is one of the most stupid things a person can do. It will just bring his liver failure and death much quicker is all. Those 20-30 years will be greatly shortened. He is also drinking on top of using methadone? Does this guy want to stay alive at all? No wonder he sleeps all day long and is lethargic. Does his doctor know that he continues to drink alcohol on top of having hep c and tops it all off with methadone? It’s a wonder he is alive at all. I think it’s time this 60 year old finally grow up and quit feeding his body booze and drugs. Way overdue. He shouldn’t be on methadone forever.
