A friend of mine is trying to rid himself of opiate addiction (heroin) however he does not have the money or insurance for rehab. So he was thinking of taking methadone ( I would be with him, i do not have an addiction to anything, i would be taking care of him and watching his dosage etc.) I was wondering how many mgs of methadone he should start off with the first day, and how much it should start decreasing and how long he should be on it before i start tapering him off. thanks!
if it makes any difference he does about 1/2 a gram day

yes you can die from heroin withdrawal its just not as common as other things but it is possible. and like i said he doesn’t have insurance nor does he have the means of getting professional help :/
and he’s been addicted about 3 months

You cant just take methadone like that , how much gear does your friend use in a day?
Methadone is much harder to come off than heroin, and you know no one died doing cold turkey, stay with him through that. In fact get him to a doctor and get some professional help.

methadone is alot harder to come off than heroin. it does stop the need to go out and find that fix though as it is a substitute and therfore once he gets stable will not need to go out and score heroin. whether he does just stick to the meth though is up to him. the amount he needs to take will depend on his currnet addiction level and will take a couple of weeks to stabalise so he will still need to take heroin until he gets the level right. coming off it will be difficult and he will have to be reduced slowly under observation but he will still have some withdrawals when he gets to the end of his reduction. I started on methadone as a way to come off heroin and now i dont touch the stuff but unfortunately 7 years later I’m still taking it but at least I am now leading a normal life and going out to work everyday. It helped me to take control and I see it that I’m just taking my medicine everyday just like many other people pop pills. hope this helps.
