Is the Combination of Methadone and Clonizapam Life Threatening, and if So, and What Should U Get Off First?

Question by Shea Pila: Is the combination of methadone and clonizapam life threatening, and if so, and what should u get off first?
I have a friend who has a mother that is on methadone and is now taking the medication clonizapam, and I have heard and read that the combination could be lethal. Is this true? And if so, what should be the first medication to get off of and why? Also, I do think that she will not be getting off the methadone any time soon, so what is the best, most painless as you can get, remedy?

yes it can be very dangerous…Although many people prescribed methadone enjoy mixing it with benzodiazapines to achieve a high, the combination is potentially life threatening due to the synergistic effect of the two substances. While detox from opiates is NOT generally life threatening (unless there is an underlying medical condition), detox from benzodiazapines is life threatening and the risk of seizures is severe.

The only safe way to detox is with medical supervision.

Mixing methadone with any benzodiazepine, which clonazepam is, can be very dangerous, lethal in some cases. In lethal overdoses where methadone is involved a benzodiazepine is usually involved too. However, if this woman is getting these medications prescribed and she’s using them as prescribed under the care of a doctor they can be used together, given that the doctor knows that she is taking both drugs of course. If she takes both medications every day she has a tolerance to them and the risk isn’t as high for her as it would be for someone who is using these drugs recreationally or have just started taking them. If the drugs are prescribed she probably needs them and should not stop taking them.
If someone needs to detox off methadone and benzos though they normally taper off the benzos first and taper off the methadone second. The other way around is not a good idea. There is no harm in staying on methadone long term so if it’s working for her there is no reason for her to get off unless she wants to. Some people stay on methadone for decades and do great.
