Methadone is a drug that operates in the body similar to heroin or OxyContin–legal heroin. It is a central nervous system depressant but also largely replaces the body’s production of endorphins.
The difference between methadone and many other similar opiates and opioids is that it has a much longer half-life. The half-life is the time that it takes 1/2 of the drug to leave the body. Many drugs like heroin have an average half-life of four hours but methadone can have a half-life of up to 96 hours.
