Are there any women in nj area who are pregnant and on methadone?
NJ has proposed a law that would take away a woman’s right to slowly STOP taking this powerful medication while pregnant. While stopping methadone is not always best for women with severe heroin addiction, it is the best course for many other pregnant women on methadone who wish to keep their babies from being born addicted or suffering methadone caused complications. It seems the state is trying to protect severe addicts from being forced off methadone, but if this is passed it will mean that the rest of the women on methadone who become pregnant will HAVE to have addicted children! NJ is waiting to hear from people on this issue… does anyone have any comments about this? Would anyone like to share or just state their outrage? I’m trying to fight this….
witchy i totally get your anger… the worst about this is the mothers who want to stay on methadone, or who would continue using street drugs, are NOT the ones affected… the moms who are targeted here are the ones who accidentally got pregnant while on pain management or in the end stages of their addiction treatment! They are protecting the people who would abuse their kids and hurting the people who want to protect their kids!

We recently found out that my cousin has an addiction to Methadone and Roxies! He is on day 5 without having anything. He is having a very hard time. I do not know what to do for him. Does anyone know what he can do to get some sleep and be a little more comfortable so that he can get through this?

I came home from Vietnam with a bad heroin habit. There are detoxes, but I sweated it out for a couple of weeks alone. Try to at least eat soup and hang in there. It won’t be too much longer. Good luck! Stick it out with him and show him compassion. He’ll be okay. I’m 59 years old now and heroin is a distant memory. God bless!

Methadone is a narcotic drug used to treat chronic pain and opiate addiction. Originally developed in Germany, during World War II, the drug was first introduced to the United States in 1947. Methadone was first used as a long-acting painkiller in both surgical and cancer patients. It wasn’t until after 1950 that methadone found use as a withdrawal treatment for heroin and morphine.
Unlike heroin and morphine, methadone is not made from opium poppies, but is synthesized in a lab. It has pain-killing properties, similar to opiates but is much longer-lasting–natural opiates last two to four hours, versus 24 hours for methadone.
