I need help trying to find help for my brother-in-law, sister, and niece. My sister is addicted to scripts?

lilly asked:

I would really like to have an intervention program take place. She is on methadone for pain, and is totally disabled, stating migraines. She passes out quite often, and my brother in law thinks she is over dosing. It is one of the symptons. This has been going on for several years. My brother in law is disabled too, and just had a kidney removed due to a spot of cancer on it. He could use some help, but my sister is too medicated to help. My niece is witnessing this. She is a junior in high school, and I know she knows what is going on cause she has called and talked to me about it. My sister is eating her script way too fast, and has miserable mood swings when they are out, until she gets taken to the hospital for a shot. They live 350 miles away from me, and I cannot get there to help him, since I just had back surgery to have a disc fusion. Please point me in the right direction. They live in Northern Michigan. Please don’t point me to the M.D., he is aware of it.

Unfortunately the first step is getting your sister to realize she has a problem. Once she admits this, any sort of counseling or therapy may actually work. If she will not admit this and get the help she needs, the only other thing I can think of is calling DSS on her, since only being a junior in HS, my guess is your niece is only 16, maybe 17, and still considered a minor. That’s about all I can think of. Sorry I wasn’t more help.

well it sounds more complicated than anything, i am a recoverying addict, i was using pain pills(oxycontin) for more than what i was suppose to use them for. now i’m going to a “methadone clinic” you go thier once a day and they give you a one time daily dose of methadone, its also considered a “pain clinic” where ppl who abuse thier script but yet need them bady. i woud talk to them about trying a methadone clinic….if you want more info let me know.

This is what I think will need to be done. Your niece needs to talk to a counselor in school. They can start an investigation. The down side of her doing this is, she may end up in foster care. But that may be the wake up call your sister needs. You could also call the child services. Understand this may cause every ones life to be difficult. It is never a cake walk when a family member (especially with children) is addicted to drugs.
Ask yourself these questions: Are you will and able to take your niece in if necessary? Are you mentally and emotionally ready for the backlash your sister may have because of your actions? Are you willing to have your sister hate you?
It is a hard road to take when you need to confront an addict.
I know because my sister was one once.
Good luck and God bless. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
