Can suboxen’s help you get off methadone?

samantha w asked:

Unfortunately, I’ve tried methadone to get off of heroin, and now I need to get off of this methadone. Awhile back, a friend had taken sub oxen after methadone, and got real sick…they were sicker than before they took anything! How long since the last methadone dose, do you reccommend taking sub oxen where it will be able to help you detox and be off of everything. My fear, is that if I wait too long, then I will be so sick, anyhow. I really know that addicts should go into treatment. But, I honestly believe I didn’t have a bad habit, and with job, and life, I’d like to try to do it on my own first. Any input or suggestions?

Look, even though you might be a functioning addict, you’re still an addict, and are vulnerable. You must get into a treatment program for proof positive, in my opinion.
Recently, I had a very good DJ friend of mine, who had an opiate/heroin addiction for 8 years, go into a local treatment program that uses Suboxone. He got a 1cc shot twice once he went in dopesick for 12 hours. He immediately felt better because the shot was similar to his oxycodone. Then the sublingual (DO NOT SWALLOW Suboxone!!!) effects of his Suboxone are making him feel like a million bucks. He praises me for showing him the way, but it’s him and his family who must pay and deal with any relapse, which I think he won’t have for the first time in his 8-year span of heroin addiction.
He also has to stay away from those who “bang” their pills, or buy bags. So, now we hang and keep it rather clean.
I don’t know why your friend got sicker on Suboxone, except that the methadone is a different type of opioid antagonist, if it’s one at all. It mimics “H” too well, while Suboxone is possibly more gentile. I’d still wait 12 hours and let dopesickness set in, but you really should consult a real clinic which treats with Suboxone/bup.
Yeah, overall, i’d say that one must be careful and wait at least 12 hours before switching from methadone to Suboxone or pure buprenephrine.
Best of luck. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OWN PERSONAL OUTLOOK ON WHETHER OR NOT YOUR HABIT IS BAD- “H” CHANGES BRAINS/CHEMISTRY, SO A DOCTOR-SETTING IS MUCH BETTER IN CASE OF COMPLICATIONS OR SICKNESS. GOOD LUCK! IT’LL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

This comes directly from the Suboxone website…
Patients transitioning from methadone to Buprenorphine require a slow taper to 30mg./day of methadone, for at least one week. Last dose must be no less than 36 hours prior to induction of Suboxone. So at least 36hrs after your last dose of Methadone should be safe. They also suggest a score of 5-6 on the COWS scale. If you want to evaluate yourself and try to this as close to how they would inpatient you can copy the COWS test at
It is not anything you couldn’t tell yourself like, “Are you Yawning, etc” If u can take your pulse you can take the COWS. I still suggest a docotr supervision but if you are gonna do this be safe.

I don’t have experience with suboxone and methadone, but I do know about suboxone and heroin. I assume it will be similiar except that you will have to wait longer from your last dose of methadone (as opposed to heroin) before taking the suboxone. You cannot take suboxone until withdrawal from the opiate has started. And you may want to wait awhile after withdrawal starts just to be safe. I’m not saying that you have to be either vomiting or having diarrhea, but you want to definitely be hurting a little bit. I once took suboxone when the withdrawal was just starting and it made me sick as a dog. If you don’t time it properly, it will just bring on instant withdrawal. And no one wants that.
